“Join us as we work towards 25% protection of Canada’s oceans by 2025 on the path to 30x30, and defend places where marine life can thrive!”

What They Do

SeaBlue Canada has worked hard to bring together an alliance of Environmental Non-Governmental Organizations (ENGOs) that collaborate with one another to advocate for better oceanic protection. The goal of this alliance is to fight for stronger protection standards for existing marine protected areas (MPAs) in Canada, as well as expanding Canada’s MPAs to work towards 25% protection by 2025.

Collaboratives

Since 2015 Canada has made efforts to meet international commitments on MPAs under the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) Aichi Target 11.

However, progress towards this target was focused on “Other Effective Area-Based Conservation Measures” (OECMs). This caused controversy as majority of Canada’s OECMs do not have effective management or monitoring programs.

SeaBlue Canada used a novel scoring approach in 2020 to evaluate all Canada’s OECMs (51) and provided recommendations to improve Canada’s OECMs as well explored other forms of OECMs Canada could pursue.

Their Work

SeaBlue Canada found that Sensitive Benthic Area (SBA) closures make up majority of the 233,498km² of ocean protected within OECMs in Canada, with multi-species closures only covering 13% and single species closures protecting the remaining 3%

SeaBlue Canada also put together eight recommendations to improve protection for Canada’s OECMs

The novel scoring approach and the ranges used to evaluate Canada’s OECMs are shown below
